Sensors Are Your Friends

There's no need to panic when your check engine light comes on. It just means that you need to take your ride in to get it serviced. If you do that right away, you could prevent something much worse from happening. That's the point of the sensors on your dash-to prevent roadside breakdowns and unfortunate problems. So don't ignore the signals. Also be sure not to confuse the check engine light with the service engine light, which simply means that your car needs an oil change. Don't panic, either, when the check engine sensor lights up, most times it simply means that a small issue has caused it to come on, such as a loose gas cap. It could also mean that a spark plug wire needs attention or the mass air flow sensor, which monitors the amount of air that is mixed in the fuel injection system is "off".
